Overview of the Scenic Area
Good morning, everyone! Welcome to Heshun Ancient Town in Tengchong. I'll be your guide for today. Heshun sits about four kilometers southwest of the city center, and it's known as the foremost of China's "Ten Most Charming Towns," as well as a famous hometown of overseas Chinese. The town itself is small and easy to walk through — we'll take our time today, with plenty of stops to rest along the way, so please don't worry about the pace.
Overseas Chinese Hometown Culture
Before we start, let me explain how Heshun earned the name "hometown of overseas Chinese." The Southern Silk Road once passed through Tengchong, and Heshun men had a long tradition of traveling abroad — mainly to Myanmar — to trade and make a living. Starting in the Ming dynasty, more and more Heshun people went to Myanmar to do business, and by the early 20th century, others had traveled as far as Japan, Europe, America, Hong Kong, and Macao.
Today, Heshun's overseas descendants live in more than ten countries and regions, numbering over 30,000 — while the town itself has only about 7,000 permanent residents. In other words, there are more Heshun people abroad than at home! Many of these overseas Chinese, once successful, never forgot their roots — they sent money home to build ancestral temples, family homes, and schools. So behind many of the buildings we'll see today, there's a story of someone who once left home to make good.
The Entrance Archway
Please look at the archway in front of us — this is the first stop of our tour, and the symbol of Heshun town. Carved on it are four characters: "He Shun Shun He." It's a clever wordplay — read forwards or backwards, it always spells out "harmony" and "peace," expressing everyone's wish for a good life. As the Chinese saying goes, "When the family is in harmony, all things flourish" — the very name of this town is itself a blessing. On the back of the archway are two more characters, "Ren Li," inscribed by Zhao Fan, a famous scholar of the late Qing dynasty who once served as the circuit intendant of Tengyue. The phrase means Heshun is a place that values morality, courtesy, and benevolent customs. Feel free to take a photo here — we'll rest for a couple of minutes before continuing.
Heshun Library
Our next stop is the place Heshun people are proudest of — the Heshun Library. The path here is flat and easy, so no need to rush. The library was founded in 1928, funded by overseas Chinese living in Myanmar, and it's the earliest and largest rural library in all of China. The main building we see today was completed in 1938, and the whole library covers over 5,000 square meters — a two-story structure blending Chinese and Western styles, with book stacks upstairs and reading rooms below.
It holds more than 70,000 books, including over 10,000 rare ancient editions, along with inscriptions from cultural figures like Hu Shi and Xiong Qinglai. Once inside, you'll likely see local residents quietly reading — it's affectionately called Heshun's "second classroom." For a town of only a few thousand people to have built something like this really is remarkable. There are seats here, so please feel free to sit down, rest, and have some water.
The Ancestral Temple of the Cun Family
Once you're rested, we'll walk just a bit further to see the oldest of Heshun's eight ancestral temples — the Cun family temple, first built during the Jiaqing era of the Qing dynasty, over two hundred years ago. There are some steps here, so please hold the railing and take your time. The Cun family has a long tradition of public welfare in Heshun. Cun Yu, an ancestor of the family in the Ming dynasty, built his fortune through trade, then led villagers to build water conservancy projects and irrigation channels that nourished the whole village.
He was deeply respected by local people, and left his family a legacy of charity. When the gate was rebuilt in 1935, craftsmen skillfully wove in Western architectural elements — a lovely example of cultural fusion. The temple is full of Confucian values of filial piety and fraternity. The main hall houses ancestral tablets, and the family's precepts are carved on both sides, showing how much the Cun family valued propriety and moral conduct. Please feel free to linger here as long as you like — there's no rush.
Ai Siqi's Former Residence
Our final stop today is the residence of Heshun's most famous historical figure — the memorial hall of Ai Siqi. It's not far from here, and the path is fairly gentle, so just take your time walking over. This home was built in 1918 by Ai Siqi's father, Li Yuegai, facing the secluded Yuanlong Pond and backed by Feng Hill — a brick-and-timber courtyard house blending Chinese and Western styles. Ai Siqi, born Li Shengxuan in 1910 right here in Heshun, became one of China's most influential Marxist philosophers and educators.
His book *Philosophy for the Masses* explained deep philosophical ideas in language ordinary people could understand, and it guided countless young people toward revolution. Another of his works, *Dialectical Materialism and Historical Materialism*, served for decades as a standard philosophy textbook in universities. That a philosopher of this stature could come from such a small town says a great deal about Heshun's long tradition of openness and respect for learning.
And with that, today's tour is essentially complete. Please feel free to sit and rest here in front of the residence, and take some photos if you'd like. Once everyone's ready, we'll gather back up and head home together.
