As posting about Zhengzhou becomes a daily pastime, what moment will you capture? The city's modern vibe, its crimson skies, the glow of the blue hour, or the newfound charm of its age-old streets?

Longhai North 3rd Street, a narrow lane just over 300 meters long in Guancheng Hui District, Zhengzhou, has recently gone viral for being incredibly photogenic, emerging as a trendy new "Citywalk" destination and a hit with young people.

What makes this old street resonate so much with young people?

The street's "old" character lies in its enduring everyday charm — its vibrant, street-level energy. Once home to the No.2 Workers' New Village, it's steeped in memories of Zhengzhou's industrial development, with every step telling a story. Nearby stands the former site of the Cultural Relics Working Team of Henan Provincial Bureau of Culture, infusing the ordinary alleyways with the profound heritage of the ancient Shang-era capital. Reproductions of ancient pottery, bronzeware and jade artifacts are displayed in shop windows, bringing history out from behind museum glass and into people's daily lives. These cultural markers weave a warm, multi-layered portrait of the city, compelling visitors to pull out their phones and start snapping photos.

Its appeal stems from its laid-back elegance. Free of the crowds of viral hotspots, the noise of commercial strips, and clusters of food stalls, the lane offers a slow-paced slice of local life, revealing Zhengzhou's authentic character. Lush greenery, sculptures, pavilions, walking paths, and cultural walls blend together seamlessly, creating a lively atmosphere. Retro, neat, and soothing—these are the first impressions visitors get, and the reason young people choose to pause and recharge from their busy lives.

The street's holistic transformation reflects thoughtful urban renewal. Along its 300-metre stretch, painted walls blend harmoniously with green plants. Upgrades to underground pipelines, gas facilities, and building facades have given a modern quality of life to this historic neighborhood. Community cultural centres, Zheng Pin Book House, cultural and sports centers and neighbourhood service stations have been added, bringing tangible benefits to local residents. Urban renewal projects lay a solid foundation for happy, livable communities, improving both outward appearance ("face") and inner substance ("core").

This popular old street is far from an isolated success story in Zhengzhou. Lianxinli, with its red walls, grey tiles and romantic street name, has become a poetic backdrop for countless photos. Former industrial sites including the No. 3 State Cotton Mill, the Oil-Chemical Plant and the Ersha Industrial Park have transformed from "rust-belt" relics to vibrant "showcase-belts" for a new generation, with each transformation embodying a blend of practical effort and creative ingenuity in urban renewal.

Revitalized old streets and beautified alleyways add fresh beauty to Zhengzhou. A city's charm lies not only in its towering skyline but also in the hidden character of its neighborhood lanes.
