The World-Famous Cradle of Life

English: Yunnan is widely recognized as one of the cradles of life on Earth. Archaeologists have unearthed huge numbers of ancient fossils here. In 1984, researchers discovered the Chengjiang Fossil Site in Chengjiang County, dating back around 530 million years to the early Cambrian period. The international paleontology community regards it as one of the most remarkable finds of the 20th century.

The fossils are so diverse and so well preserved that they clearly capture what early animal life looked like, marking the beginning of life's great "explosion" on Earth. Together with two other sites, it's known as one of "the three great wonders of early evolution on Earth" — the other two being the Ediacaran fossils found in Australia in 1946 (about 600 million years old) and the Burgess Shale fossils found in Canada in 1909 (about 515 million years old).

An Important Birthplace of Humankind

English: Yunnan is also an important region for the origins of humankind. Starting in 1956, archaeologists uncovered Ramapithecus fossils in Kaiyuan County dating back about 15 million years, fossils in Lufeng County dating back about 8 million years, and fossils in Yuanmou County dating back roughly 3 to 4 million years. Then in 1965, the discovery of "Yuanmou Man" in Yuanmou County — dated to about 1.7 million years ago — is considered the earliest human fossil found so far anywhere in China or Asia. In many ways, this find marks the true starting point of Chinese history.

Traces from the Paleolithic and Neolithic Ages

English: Along the Jinsha River and around Dianchi Lake and Erhai Lake, archaeologists have also found large numbers of Paleolithic and Neolithic artifacts, all evidence of Yunnan's ongoing social development. Separately, some scholars studying the Yi people's "Ten-Month Solar Calendar" have argued this could point to Yunnan being one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization itself.

The Primitive and Slave Societies: The Founding of the Dian Kingdom

English: During the Primitive and Slave Society periods, a number of major events unfolded in Yunnan. According to legend, Yu the Great, founding ruler of the Xia Dynasty (c. 2070–1600 BC), divided China into nine regions, and Yunnan fell within the region called Liangzhou. By the Yin-Shang period (1600–1046 BC), the area was home to minority tribes such as the Dian, Laojin, Mimo, Xi, Kunming, and Sou, collectively known as the "southwestern tribes" because of their remote location in southwest China.

In 279 BC, during the Warring States Period, General Zhuang Qiao of the State of Chu led his troops into the Dian Lake area and founded Yunnan's first known political state, the Kingdom of Dian, which lasted from the Warring States Period into the Western Han Dynasty. Bronze artifacts unearthed at Lijiashan in Chengjiang County reveal the kingdom's impressive bronze-casting skills, from weapons to farming tools. The most iconic piece is the "Bronze Statue of Cow and Tiger," now a nationally protected treasure that has toured exhibitions abroad. In October 1994, China's first bronze-themed museum, the Lijiashan Bronze Museum, opened in Jiangchuan County, Yuxi City, Yunnan.

The Qin and Han Dynasties: Where the Name "Yunnan" Comes From

English: In 221 BC, King Ying Zheng of Qin unified the other six warring states, proclaimed himself the First Emperor, and founded the Qin Dynasty — marking China's entry into feudal society. Emperor Qin ordered the construction of the "Five-Chi Road" (one chi being roughly a third of a meter), running from Yibin in Sichuan all the way to Qujing in Yunnan, and appointed officials to govern the areas along it. This was the beginning of formal central government rule over Yunnan.

Later, during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han, the envoy Zhang Qian, while traveling in the western regions, heard about a route called the "Shu–India Road" linking Chengdu to India through the southwest. In 122 BC, Emperor Wu sent officials and troops to find this route — later known as the Southern Silk Road — but the mission failed due to resistance from the Kunming tribe near Erhai Lake. Furious, the emperor had a large lake dug near the capital to train naval forces for a future campaign against the tribes there. Thirteen years later, in 109 BC, Han forces marched south, defeated the tribes around Erhai, and established Yizhou Prefecture, which oversaw 24 counties — including "Yunnan County," located in what is now Xiangyun County in the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture.

The name "Yunnan" first appears in a report to Emperor Wu describing colorful clouds spotted in the southwest. Intrigued, the emperor ordered his officials to locate the place — the earliest official record of the name "Yunnan," meaning "south of the colorful clouds." Emperor Wu also formally recognized the king of Dian, presenting him with a gold seal — later unearthed by archaeologists, confirming the kingdom's historical existence. The Western Han government went on to establish seven more prefectures in the southwest, four of them within present-day Yunnan, further cementing its rule over the region.

In AD 69, during the Eastern Han Dynasty, Emperor Ming established Yongchang Prefecture in Yunnan. Among the 105 prefectures nationwide at the time, Yongchang had the second-largest population, and this roughly fixed the western border of Yunnan.

By the end of the Han Dynasty, China split into the Three Kingdoms — Wei, Shu, and Wu. Yunnan fell under Shu's control and, together with western Guizhou and southwestern Sichuan, was referred to as the "southwestern region." In May AD 225, Zhuge Liang, Prime Minister of Shu, personally led troops to put down a rebellion led by the Yi tribal leader Meng Huo and other local chiefs, formally bringing the southwest under Shu's rule. In AD 271, the Western Jin government merged four neighboring prefectures into "Ningzhou," one of 19 administrative divisions nationwide. The Cuan clan subsequently rose to dominance in the region, and Ningzhou's seat, Wei County (present-day Qujing), became Yunnan's political center for a time.

The Sui and Tang Dynasties: The Rise of the Nanzhao Kingdom

English: During the Sui and Tang dynasties (581–907), six sizeable tribes formed around Erhai Lake, and among them, the Nanzhao tribe grew the fastest. Meanwhile, Tibet, a powerful force to the northwest, repeatedly threatened Tang territory, leading to a series of conflicts. In 707, Tang forces defeated the Tibetans near Erhai and erected an iron pillar to commemorate the victory.

To secure an ally against Tibet, the Tang court then backed Nanzhao's efforts to unify the other five tribes. In 738, Emperor Xuanzong formally named Piluoge, leader of Nanzhao, "King of Yunnan," officially founding the Kingdom of Nanzhao — a state that would last 247 years across 13 kings. Unfortunately, during the Tianbao era (742–755), poor policy decisions by the Tang court toward Nanzhao led to two wars, and relations between the two broke down badly.

The Kingdom of Dali: Three Centuries of Rule

English: In 937, Duan Siping founded the Kingdom of Dali near Erhai Lake, replacing Nanzhao. It endured for 315 years across 22 kings. After the Song Dynasty was established in 960, relations between Dali and the Song court remained strained — Emperor Huizong of Song even drew a boundary at the Dadu River, declaring everything beyond it no longer part of Song territory. Even though Dali lay outside that line, it repeatedly sought friendly relations with the Song. But Song military power fell well short of the earlier Tang Dynasty's, and misunderstandings about the old Nanzhao–Tang relationship led the Song emperor to reject Dali's request to become a vassal state.

Nanzhao and Dali, spanning roughly the same eras as the Tang and Song dynasties respectively, both hold an important place in the history of Yunnan and of China as a whole. Throughout both periods, Dali served as Yunnan's political and economic center.

The Yuan Dynasty: Yunnan Becomes an Official Province

English: In 1253, Kublai Khan led Mongol forces across the Jinsha River — soldiers famously used inflated sheep- and ox-hide rafts to make the crossing — and conquered the Kingdom of Dali. In 1271, the Yuan Dynasty was formally established, lasting until its collapse in 1368.

The Yuan government designated Yunnan as one of its eleven provinces — the first time "Yunnan" was officially used as a provincial-level administrative name — and moved the provincial capital from Dali to Kunming. Yunnan has functioned as a province ever since. Under officials such as Sayyid Ajall Shams al-Din, Yunnan's agriculture developed rapidly. During this period, the Yuan court also introduced the "native chieftain system" (tusi), appointing local ethnic leaders to govern their own communities.

The Ming Dynasty: Han Chinese Become the Majority in Yunnan

English: In 1381, the Ming court sent troops into Yunnan, followed by large waves of soldiers and civilians who settled the land and reclaimed wasteland for farming. From this point on, Han Chinese became the majority population in Yunnan, while other ethnic groups became minorities. The Ming government also began phasing out the tusi chieftain system in some areas in favor of directly appointed Han officials — a policy known as "replacing native chiefs with rotating officials" (gaitu guiliu). Mining and metallurgy flourished under the Ming, with Yunnan's silver and copper output ranking first nationwide.

The Ming Dynasty fell in 1644. Loyalists and remnants of the old court later installed a member of the imperial clan as emperor, establishing the Southern Ming regime. Emperor Yongli eventually entered Yunnan and made Kunming his capital, but the general Wu Sangui later helped Qing forces kill Yongli and had himself named King of Yunnan.

In 1681, the Qing government suppressed the "Revolt of the Three Feudatories," which included Wu Sangui. Under the Yongzheng Emperor, the gaitu guiliu policy was rolled out across Yunnan on a much larger scale, dividing the province into three administrative regions collectively known as the "Three Yi" — Eastern, Western, and Southern — which is why Yunnan also came to be nicknamed "Sanyi" (Three Yi). From the early to mid-Qing period, Yunnan's copper output remained the highest in the country; by the late Qing, copper production declined while tin production rose to take the national lead.

The Modern Era: Resisting Foreign Invasion

English: After the Opium War, Yunnan entered the modern era, but France and Britain soon moved in, attempting to bring the region under their influence. They forced open trading ports in Mengzi, Hekou, and Kunming, sought control over the railway from Kunming to Vietnam, and eyed mining rights across seven prefectures in Yunnan.

The people of Yunnan fought back — against both foreign incursion and oppression from the Qing court — through episodes such as the Margary Affair, the Banhong Incident, and the Pianma Incident, resisting British encroachment while also fighting for mining and railway rights and pushing back against foreign religious influence. Uprisings led by Du Wenxiu and Li Wenxue, along with anti-Qing movements organized by the Tongmenghui in Hekou and Yongchang, broke out in succession. During the 1911 Revolution, uprisings in Tengyue, the "September 9th Uprising" in Kunming, and the Lin'an Uprising toppled Qing rule in Yunnan and led to the founding of the Yunnan Military Government. In 1915, when Yuan Shikai attempted to restore the monarchy, the people of Yunnan launched the "National Protection Movement" to oppose him.

The War Against Japan: Yunnan as the Rear Base

English: During the War of Resistance Against Japan, Yunnan became the country's strategic rear base. Factories, schools, and universities relocated here in large numbers from the coast and inland regions, giving rise to four industrial zones — Haikou, Majie, Ciba, and Anning — which produced many of China's "firsts," including its first telescope and first electrical wire. Kunming grew into a key industrial and educational hub.

The National Southwest Associated University, formed by the merger of Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Nankai University after their relocation to Yunnan, achieved remarkable academic success and earned the nickname "Fortress of Democracy." Hundreds of thousands of soldiers from Yunnan fought bravely at the front, distinguishing themselves in the Battle of Tai'erzhuang and the Battle of Zhongtiao Mountain.

The Kunming–Vietnam Railway, the Burma Road, the Sino-Indian Road (the Stilwell Road), and the "Hump" air route were China's only remaining links to the outside world at the time — earning Yunnan the nickname "the lifeline of the resistance." In May 1942, Japanese troops invaded western Yunnan, turning the province into an active front line; two years later the invaders were driven out, making Yunnan the first province in China to recover its lost territory. Yunnan also accepted a Japanese surrender in Vietnam — the only instance of a Chinese province accepting a surrender on foreign soil.

The Liberation of Yunnan

English: After the victory over Japan, Chiang Kai-shek launched the Chinese Civil War. Students in Kunming were among the first to rise up, sparking a wave of anti-war movements — the most famous being the "December 1st Movement," regarded as the third major milestone in the history of China's youth movements. On December 9, 1949, General Lu Han led an uprising in Kunming, after which the People's Liberation Army pursued and defeated the remaining enemy forces, liberating all of Yunnan. In March 1950, the People's Government of Yunnan Province was formally established, opening a brand-new chapter in the region's history.
