Young people dream of the future as they march forward into the next stages of their lives. On the morning of May 16th, the 2026 Zhengzhou Joint Graduation Ceremony for University Students took place at Zhengzhou University of Light Industry under the slogan Zhengzhou Needs You for a Bright Future.
During the ceremony, Wu Ming, a German graduate from Henan University of Chinese Medicine, amazed the audience with his fluent Henan dialect. He had studied martial arts since the age of nine and chanced upon a Shaolin master travelling in Germany. During his training under the master, he first experienced the rhythm of Chinese culture and came to know the insights of traditional Chinese medicine, which shares the origins of martial arts. Ever since, a desire to visit the Central Plains quietly took root in his heart.

Martial arts birthed his bond with the Central Plains, and traditional Chinese medicine anchored his life in Zhengzhou. For ten years in Zhengzhou, he studied under Song Zhaopu, a national-level master practitioner of Song-style TCM surgery. There, he learned to perform the four diagnostic methods, prescribe herbal formulas, and administer acupuncture. Through this training, he evolved from a foreigner unfamiliar with basic TCM concepts like yin/yang and the five elements into an independent TCM practitioner.
When he first arrived in Henan, Wu Ming struggled with language barriers, remarking that "the people around me sounded like they were singing." Yet his love for Chinese medicine drove him to overcome many difficulties, and he eventually became proficient in understanding and interpreting the Henan dialect, noting that "to truly master something, you must stay grounded and be patient." Day after day he kept learning, observing and providing medical services alongside his master Song Zhaopu. "What my master taught me is not just medical skills, but also medical ethics: Heal the sick, respect every herb, and treat every patient with sincerity," he said. Such steady growth has made Wu Ming regard Zhengzhou not as a foreign land, but as his second home.
"My original goal in getting on social media," he said, "was to help more people, especially young audiences, engage with TCM in an approachable manner." He opened accounts under the name Wu Ming in Henan on platforms such as Douyin and Xiaohongshu, regularly posting videos to promote the culture of TCM. In his spare time, he continues to practice martial arts and competes in the Wu Lin Feng (or Kung Fu Wind) amateur competition. He has also launched his own wellness brand, Wu Ming You Fang, releasing a series of herbal teas. A physical store is scheduled to open later this year. "My main pursuit in TCM has rooted me in Zhengzhou, while my side endeavors allow me to share my affection for this city with more people." Wu Ming has a sincere love for both Chinese medicine and the city.
In his speech, Wu Ming invited the graduates to stay in Henan and Zhengzhou: "Zhengzhou provides ample room for entrepreneurship and a platform to realize your potential. This is undoubtedly a home worth staying in."
