
第一次去敦煌,收获多多。敦煌可算是古典时代东西方文明的心脏,五方杂处,包容万端,沉寂近千年,处于横盘断崖,近现代以来为世人瞩目,成为当代人一生的打卡圣地。尽管莫高窟的壁画艺术大部分平庸,但前人摩画时的精神仍给今人无尽的安慰,这事实本身就是精神劳作的意义。我给人讲《心经》、《金刚经》,有来印法师全程护法,非常殊胜,遗憾的是我仍不能把生命的经验完美地分享表达。敦煌的时空特点还让我理解前人所说的,人身难得,中土难生,正法难闻。当然,对校友樊锦诗老师有些失望,她在敦煌一生,居然只是一个大时代的三好学生。

Dunhuang truly stands as the heart of Eastern and Western civilizations in the classical era, a melting pot of diverse cultures, embracing all aspects, having remained silent for nearly a thousand years. Situated in a precarious position, it has drawn worldwide attention in modern times, becoming a must-visit pilgrimage site for contemporary people. Although most of the mural art in the Mogao Caves is mediocre, the spirit of the predecessors who created these murals still brings endless comfort to modern people. This fact itself is the meaning of spiritual labor. When I taught the Heart Sutra and the Diamond Sutra to others, Venerable Laiyin served as my constant protector, which was truly auspicious. However, it is a pity that I still cannot perfectly share and express my life experiences. The unique temporal and spatial characteristics of Dunhuang also made me understand what the ancients said: “It is rare to be born human, rarer to be born in the Middle Kingdom, and rarest to hear the true Dharma.” Of course, I felt somewhat disappointed with my fellow alumna, Professor Fan Jingshi. Having spent her entire life in Dunhuang, she turned out to be nothing more than an exemplary student of the great era.古代制定历法是王者的工作,现代人的一大福利是人人可以参与制定历法,比如今年以来列入日程的给月亮制定历法。在听到参与月亮历法的消息当晚,我就做了一个梦,梦中人们去月球旅行跟去南极北极一样轻松平常。说实话,我没预料到科技文明调时定时的工作会这么快速地来临。
古者制历,王者之事也。今人一大福利,乃人人可得与制历之事,譬如今年以来,将为月制定历法列入日程。闻参与月历之事之夜,吾即得一梦,梦中人往月球旅行,若往南极北极般轻松寻常。实言之,吾未料科技文明中调时定时之事,竟至如此迅捷也。In ancient times, formulating calendars was the work of kings. One of the great blessings for modern people is that everyone can participate in calendar-making, such as the plan to formulate a calendar for the Moon that has been put on the agenda since this year. On the night I heard the news of participating in the Moon calendar, I had a dream in which people traveled to the Moon as easily and ordinarily as going to the North or South Pole. To be honest, I did not expect that the work of timing and scheduling in technological civilization would come so quickly.
死亡是很多人回避的话题,有的民族则欣赏“临终的眼”。人活到最后阶段就要面临这个问题,正常的心理应该是恋恋不舍,因为庄重利乐一生而创造了价值,还有一种是希望早点解脱,因为“那美好的仗我已经打过了,应行的路我已经行尽,所信的道我已经守住”,是时候告别再见了。有个朋友就说他年少时听奶奶说得最多的话是,我怎么还不死?老天爷怎么还不让我死?

死亡,乃众人之忌讳,然亦有民族,欣赏“临终之目”。人至暮年,终须直面此题。常人之心,当为眷恋不舍,盖因一生庄重利乐,已创价值;亦有另一种,盼早日解脱,盖因“美好之仗,已毕;应行之途,已尽;所信之道,已守”,是时也,当别矣。有友尝言,其少时,闻祖母所言最频者,乃“吾何迟迟未死?苍天何迟迟不令吾死?”Death is a topic many avoid, yet some cultures appreciate the “eyes of the dying.” When people reach the final stage of life, they must face this issue. A normal psychological state should be reluctance to part, because one has lived a life of dignity and benefit, creating value. There is also another kind who wish for an early release, because “the good fight I have fought, the course I have finished, the faith I have kept,” it is time to say goodbye. A friend once told me that when he was young, the most frequent words he heard from his grandmother were, “Why haven’t I died yet? Why doesn’t God let me die yet?”
很多人不知道自己的家风,其实家风不都是写成文字供人读的。父母家人言传身教,对自己的做人做事产生了影响,这就是家风。有三个朋友聚在一起说家风,有人说他母亲跟他说,“瓦片也有翻身的时候。”让他一辈子都平等待人。另一个人说他母亲教育他,“不怕慢,就怕站。”他实践了半辈子,受益无穷,他说他自信只要去做事一定成功,身边的人三五年时间都花在锻炼减重、在学外语、在追寻爱情等等方面却难以成功,他说他们的问题不是“慢了”,而是“站了”。他感慨说,他的这个家风其实是经济学里的复利法则。还有一个人,他家的家风就是父母跟他说,“不要去挣有数的钱!”他后来就一直不安于打工、上班,结果真的早早地有了财务自由。
人多不知己之家风,实则家风非皆著之文牍以供人读者也。父母家人,言传身教,于己之为人处世,产生影响,此即家风。有三友聚而论家风,一人言其母尝语之曰:“瓦片亦有翻身日。”使其终身待人皆以平等。另一人言其母教之曰:“不畏行缓,只畏不行。”其践行半生,受益匪浅。彼自信但有所为,必能成事,而周遭之人,三五年光阴,或耗于健身减肥,或费于学语,或迷于求爱,终难有成。彼谓其辈之弊,非“缓”也,乃“不行”也。彼慨叹曰,其家风实乃经济学所谓复利之理。复有一人,其家家风,乃父母告之曰:“勿去挣那有数之钱!”其人后遂不安于为佣、为吏,果真早早获致财务之自由。
Many people are unaware of their family ethos, yet it is not always written down for others to read. The family ethos is truly embodied in the verbal teachings and personal examples set by parents and relatives, which influence how one conducts oneself and behaves in life. Three friends once gathered to discuss their family ethos. One said his mother told him, “Even a tile has its time to turn over,” which made him treat everyone with equality throughout his life. Another recounted his mother’s advice: “Don’t fear slowness, fear only standing still.” He practiced this principle for half his life and benefited immensely. He expressed confidence that as long as he took action, he would surely succeed. Meanwhile, the people around him spent three to five years exercising to lose weight, learning foreign languages, pursuing love, and so on, yet found it hard to achieve success. He said their problem wasn’t “being slow,” but “standing still.” He remarked that his family ethos was essentially the compound interest principle in economics. The third friend mentioned that his family’s ethos was simply his parents telling him, “Don’t go chasing numbered money!” As a result, he never felt content with working for others or holding a regular job, and indeed achieved financial freedom at a young age.张益唐的妹妹回忆说她妈妈,对于儿子取得的辉煌成就,妈妈并没有表现出特别的激动。别人对妈妈说:“你真了不起,生出这么棒的一个儿子,一个伟大的数学家”。妈妈说,我只要看到我的儿子,看到他健康快乐就够了,别的我不关心。

张益唐之妹忆曰,其母于子所建辉煌之功,未尝显特别之激动。或谓其母曰:“君真非凡人,生此等贤子,乃伟大之数学家也。”母曰:“吾但见吾子,见其康健欢愉足矣,余者,吾不挂怀。”Zhang Yitang’s sister recalled her mother, saying that regarding her son’s remarkable achievements, the mother did not show particular excitement. When others told her, “You’re truly remarkable, to have given birth to such an outstanding son, a great mathematician,” the mother replied, “I just need to see my son, see that he is healthy and happy. That’s enough for me. I don’t care about the rest.”
